 "Small is beautiful" 2009-12-07

Very low profile, fits on a book shelve. I used to have a large HP Scanjet, this one is 4 times less thick. I was able to move it from my desk to my bookshelve. It works fine.

 "Portable and happy" 2009-12-02
By R. Adams (Paradise Valley, AZ)
When I first considered this scanner, it was because of the price. When I got the scanner, I found myself using it as both a scanner for a desktop computer, but also a laptop. I love this scanner and the fact it is portable. Yes some have said it is a little flimsy. Sure. I guess. Just be careful packing it up (But that should go without saying?)

 "just doesn't work" 2009-12-01
By Teatime2 (MA, USA)
Installed software properly, then connected the scanner. When I asked it to scan, it told me it didn't find the drivers.

I uninstalled, then custom re-installed the drivers as specified in the help provided. Same error message.

Went to the Canon download site, dowloaded up-to-date drivers. Still didn't work.

I'm returning the scanner because I'm not going to spend two days tracking down why it won't find the drivers. Thankfully, amazon will accept the return for refund.

This is a good scanner after the installation problems were resolved. The instructions for installation were inadequate necessitating several phone calls. The first scanner I received was defective but Canon sent a replacement unit immediately.

"Good scans, intuitive to use, with moderate speed" 2009-11-25
By Debbie Lee Wesselmann (the Lehigh Valley, PA)
Although the Canon LiDE 200 is not the fastest scanner around, it provides a good option for the budget-conscious consumer; for Mac users with Snow Leopard, it works right out of the box, and Windows/older OS X users need only to install from the CD. The scanner attaches to the computer via USB cable and requires no outside power to run. It is simple, sleek, and relatively sturdy.

Like many budget scanners, the Canon takes a while to warm up between scans, a process that takes less than a minute but which can still be annoying if you want to scan many documents. The scans themselves are fairly quick. But the best feature of the LiDE is the ability for the scanner to determine separate documents on the flat bed surface, allowing users to "warm up" once and perform, say, four different scans with one push of a button. (This feature seems to be the default, although the preferences can be changed to scan everything as a single document.) The scanner never failed to detect the boundaries between photographs. All photos I scanned were of good enough quality to enlarge and use in a print project. As with all scanners, it's important to keep the flat bed clean and free of dust and fingerprints to achieve the best results.

I recommend the Canon for anyone who needs a scanner for light or moderate use. If you plan to scan a lot, you might be better off investing in a faster model.

PEC PADs are the ideal photo wipes for those who hate photowipes! Until PEC PADs came along, photowipes fell apart, left lint and scratched emulsions. PEC PADs are extremely strong, lint-free and so soft and pure it is almost impossible to scratch an emulsion with them. PEC PADs are so soft they can be safely used to clean all types of sensitive surfaces: scanners, CD's, mirrors, lenses, telescopes etc. PEC PADs are available in two convenient sizes. The 4 x 4 inch (10 cm.sq.) wipes are perfect for cleaning 35mm and other small areas; the 9 x 9 inch (25 cm.sq.) wipes are best suited for larger film or print formats, murals, scanners etc.

"PEC-PAD Lint Free Wipes are "on the spot"" 2009-12-08
By Robert W. Stuhrman (Seattle, WA USA)
When I first saw these advertised, I was somewhat wary. Now that I have them in hand, I can say that these wipes are very effective and useful on optics and other critical surfaces. They should always be used with a proper cleaning fluid. "Spit" is not a proper cleaning fluid. I have no trepidation about using PEC-PADS on my expensive camera lenses. I have not yet tried them on photographic emulsions, however. These pads are not "cheap", neither in quality nor price. I'll pay the price when I am assured that the product works and does no damage.

"A product that does just what it says" 2009-11-19
By Maxwell Johnson (Orlando,, FL, USA)
PEC-PADs are small squares of paper useful for cleaning lenses, mirrors, scanner/copier beds, etc. They are soft and essentially lint free. To my knowledge, no paper or cloth is absolutely lint free so if you, like another reviewer, go looking for fibers with a jeweler's loupe you'll probably find some. Fortunately, if they are so small they can only be seen under significant magnification, they will cause you no image degradation.

I do encourage users to keep the opened packages in a clean, dust-free environment such as a small plastic food container. If dust settles on the pads it can be transferred to the lens. In fact, it is quite easy to pick up some grit from any number of sources, including the glass surface, itself, and then abrade the lens inadvertently. In other words, " ultra soft and lint-free" refers to the virgin pads and should not lead one to a false sense of security.

My only other objection is the obscenely high price. That, alas, is to be expected with specialty items of this type. Buy from Amazon or a reliable internet seller such as Adorama or BH and you'll save money over camera store prices.

In short, a good product that performs exactly as described.

"Not the best for negetive cleaning" 2009-10-26
By DaddyOfTwins (Chapel Hill)
Tried this for cleaning 35mm film and also to clean the scanner (Cannon 8800F) bed. 1) This is definitely not lint "free". Cleaned the scanner bed with a wipe just out of the packet while looking through a 8x magnifying loupe. I can see lint left behind. When used with PEC-12, noticed a thin film of whitish goo, probably from the wipe. 2) Tried using with PEC-12 for wiping negetives and again the results were not good. Left lint behind and also left minor scratches. So this is generally ok for wiping optics where a very small pices of lint is ok, but not for negatives.

"Great for DSLR sensor cleaning" 2009-08-12
By Chun Li (Anywhere, USA)
The sensors of my D70s and D40 have accumulated dirt spots. A rocket blaster could blow away only some of them. I also tried dust blower, only to leave water marks on the sensor. Fortunately, the water was on the glass in front of the sensor, not on the sensor itself. (When talking about sensor cleaning, we really mean cleaning the glass in front of the sensor.) After reading the reviews, I ordered these PEC-PAD wipes, a bottle of E2 solution, and a SensorWand. The result is great.

I initially cut open one side of the plastic wrap of the wipes and pulled a wipe at a time out of the package. Since they are tightly packed, the pulling generated lots of friction on the surface of the wipe and thus lots of lint. I then cut a bigger opening and the lint is no longer present. It took a few exercises to learn how to wipe well and how much force should be used. Each wipe is big enough that it can be re-wrapped several times.

A good cleaning should not introduce new spots to the sensor. But if you find lint and do not want to touch the sensor again, a rocket blaster will help remove the lint. There is a spot that I cannot remove after repeated wiping. It might be on the back of the glass and I have to live with it. I put these wipes, the E2 solution, the SensorWand, and the rocket blaster into a Ziploc bag to keep them away from dirt.

I ordered all the items from Micro-Tools, which will do combined shipping and reduce shipping cost. Micro-Tools even included a small bag of candies in the shipment.

 "Awesome Photo/Negative Scanner!" 2009-12-09
By Emily E. Carter (CT)
We purchased two negative and one photo scanners at Best Buy. After fumbling with the flimsy apparatus provided with the negative scanner, I saw the Epson V500 Photo Scanner on Amazon. I checked the other reviews and made the plunge. I'm so glad I did!

I returned the two negative to digital photo scanners (the combined cost was greater than the Epson) and now use only the Epson. It is awesome. I can lay up to six photos on the bed and it will scan each photo in as separate photos! The negative holder holds up to 12 negatives, it takes a little longer to scan them in but I find other things to do while they are being scanned in and come back to it.

I kept the photo scanner I had (it is a single photo type - put the photo between a piece of plastic and push it through scanner) but only because I used the heck out of it. It was slow, manually intensive, required cleaning often, and doesn't look like it will last to the end of all of the photos I have to scan.

My recommendation to anyone is pass on any other products if you plan to scan photos and negatives to digital and buy this product. We were able to scan a photo album in half the time with the Epson that it took with the other product and the only cleaning required was glass cleaner. Epson Perfection V500 Photo Scanner

trial and error to get things to work to my liking. It

would be nice to have an already printed manual.

I've used it with 110 neg color film up to the max the V500

would fit in the copy area. 110 had to be pushed up against

the edge of the 35MM window to keep it straight

Overall I'm very satisfied with the V500

"Works perfect on Windows 7" 2009-12-05
By Craig G (Ballwin, MO USA)
I unpacked this scanner and had it up and running on Windows 7 in less than 10 minutes. Go to Epson's web site for the latest Windows 7 driver. Their isn't one on the included CD. Once you install the driver and plug in the usb cord everything is there. I scanned film negatives and slides and was amazed at how well they looked. There are several things you can do to adjust the color like digital ice and such. It made a big difference with older slides I had. Highly recommend this scanner. I ended up paying $130 for it off of amazon, great deal.

 "So far so good..." 2009-12-05
By R. L. Taylor (Lyme, NH United States)
Just started using this scanner and it seems to be a good one. I have scanned about 50 photos and one B&W neg. All look great. The negative was an odd size so had to place it by hand.. this took a few tries as the scanner wanted to split it into two images. Also, when you scan several photos at the same time the scanner occasionally groups 2 or more into a single image. This is to be expected, it's a machine, not a human. To solve this issue just re arrange the photos on the plate slightly further apart, or scan one at a time. Either way the software does a great job of saving and naming the images. I have high hopes for this scanner. I will re-post if it disappoints.

"Sweet machine! Makes my old MP730 look like a dinosaur!" 2009-12-08
By Epicac (U.S.)
I read these reviews and comments yesterday before I bought the MP990 last night. I replaced a Canon MP730 and a Canon i900D with the MP990. I never used the fax function on the MP730 nor did I ever use the sheet feeder. I had a couple of issues to figure out, but stepping back and thinking for a minute helped resolve the issues. Considering that I was doing this during happy hour, I did pretty well. I tried to figure out how to install the print head but hadn't lifted the platen to reveal the guts of the machine. Once I realized that the diagram in the instructions didn't match what I was looking at, it was a simple issue to lift the glass and the print head mount slid right into view. I also hadn't powered on the machine yet. It's amazing what actually following the directions can do for you! The print head mounted easily, and it was way cool to see the red lights blaze with each ink tank installed! It also took me a few minutes to figure out where the front cassette was! I tried (ever so gently) to pull out pieces that weren't meant to come out until I realized the cassette was beneath the paper output tray.

I did not require any cable to download anything or configure the printer for Wi-Fi. The printer found all wireless networks in reach. I had actually had the network name incorrect, but the printer found the one I use. With finding the WEP key, the connection couldn't have been easier and I learned a few things about wireless networks in the process.

I downloaded and installed the drivers and software updates from the Canon website for Windows 7 and all works well so far.

As far as I'm concerned, this was a very good buy, but time will tell. I'd give this printer 5 stars.

 "Are you Kidding Me?" 2009-12-07
By S. Hochman (Boca Raton, FL United States)
It's no wonder Canon took so long to come up with wireless printers--they had no idea of what they're doing. I got this MX860 the other night and there are about 60 pages on how to setup one's network. Apparently, one can not setup the network from the printer and printer screen, as they could with normal printers like Brother, HP, etc.

You have to start a USB connection and run an install program that runs as slow as dirt to run wireless on this printer. This is like starting a jet by pulling it by horses. It baffles the imagination that Canon could make this so convoluted and over-complicated. In addition to that Canon fills up your computer with garbage.

It loads up about five programs into your startup tray, which bogs down your computer, and really serves no purpose at all.

No thanks! This baby is shipping back and I'll look at a company that knows how to make a printer like Brother or Epson.

 "excellent printer" 2009-12-04
By M. Borgia
I found this very easy to set up. I just followed the steps and had absolutely no problems. I was concerned about installing the print head, but I did exactly as the directions stated and demonstrated, and it went in with ease. I had no problems installing the ink cartridges, they just snap in. The print quality is excellent and print speed is good. I rarely do photo printing on my printer so I cannot comment on that. However, like most printers today, it runs out of ink very quickly (and I do not do photos). I only use it to print school work and I had to replace the black ink in less than 2 weeks. I like the individual ink cartridges so that you can replace just the ones that are empty. I have used it now for about a month. I will probably have to replace the 4 color cartridges within the next week. Brand name ink is ridiculously expensive. Two refills of each cartridge costs more than a new printer. But I don't use the brand ink as a general rule. So considering I do not do photos and do not do a heavy amount of printing, it does use a lot of ink. But, I don't think that you can find a printer that does not use a lot of ink today. The companies plan to make their money on the ink. I took one star off the total score because of the ink consumption.

 "I LOVE IT!" 2009-11-27
By E. Rochniak (Rochester, NY)
I have only had the printer a few days so my experience with it is limited, but I have to say that so far I am very impressed. The footprint is a little large, but it has weight and feels like quality construction. I was a little intimidated when I started the set-up, but the instructions walk you through it step-by-step and I had no problems. I mostly dreaded trying to set up the wireless networking; they offer you more than one set-up option, but I followed the directions for copying the network settings from Windows Vista onto a USB drive and it worked like a charm! The printing is fast and quiet and I love the automatic duplex printing.

 "Great Scanner, Great price!" 2009-12-05
By Juan C. Moreno (Miami, FL USA)
I'm an architectural student so I bought this scanner to scan my sketches to then turn them into design presentations of my different class projects...

The things I was looking for in a scanner were

1. Economy

2. Quality

3. Easy of Use

4. Speed

5. Customize Capable

1. This is one of the best scanners I have tried under $ 80

2. The quality is excellent! specially in my case that I scan hand drawn sketches . I have scanned color images and the fidelity to the original is great. As some other reviews have mentioned the scanned colors are a little cooler that the original, however nothing that can't be fixed with some tweaks in the advanced menu

3. The different modes that the epson scan software offers are great, they can be as simple or complicated as your skill level requires, which is a great feature in my opinion.

4. The speed is great!, my sketches take less than 2 mins to scan at 600 dpi, which in some other scanners that i tried took much longer than that. Also the startup time is excellent. I don't have to wait for the scanner to "warm up", which is a feature I love!

5. Finally this is similar to 3. it allows you to customize your setting to suit your needs.

"Good hardware, portable across operating systems. Mac drivers could use TLC" 2009-11-28
By WiltDurkey (Vancouver, BC Canada)
I did some research before buying the V300, because I use Windows, OS X (Macs) and Linux at home. My previous scanner was a LIDE 80, which is pretty much Windows-only. For what I use it for, which is mostly scanning bank statements and the like, I feel uneasy storing the images under Windows, because of security. I tried setting up the LIDE 80 under Linux and my Mac, no luck in either.

So, I was looking for a multi-platform scanner and the V300 fits the bill. It does nice images as well and scans multiple pages into PDFs - (in image mode as far as I can, meaning that I can't grab text from the scanned PDFs).

However the flip side is that the Mac drivers (I use the term very loosely here), which don't seem to be updated too often, are klutzy to use with regards to file names, especially compared to my LIDE 80. I can't seem to save settings from session to session and I can't ask it to prompt for file names. By default, scans go under "Pictures", which isn't so useful for documents. I have to rename them, because it insists on working with a prefix, rather than the final file name. And the prefix is limited to about 20 characters in length.

Each scan has to be initiated by pressing on the scanner button twice, which then loads the driver (after a short delay) and then you need to press the Scan on the driver, and Finish at the end to save the file. As noted, you need to rename the file and, eventually move it from Pictures to the directory you want to keep it in. Once the file is saved, the driver unloads. Repeat, for each file - lots of work, which could be simpler. Yes, I realize this a photo scanner, not a document scanner, but I do scan pictures and don't want to have to use another scanner to do it.

In conclusion, the hardware is nice and the portability across computer types is much appreciated. I wish they spent a bit of time polishing up their Mac drivers though. 4.5/5, but not quite 5.

Just got the scannner, took me a while to get it to work.

Things I like about it.

-Powered off USB, compact, scans at reasonable speed, and budget pricing.

Then the software issue.

-MP Navigator never worked (updated drivers, softwares from Canon, even updated Windows). Did a little search online, all seem to point to some issues with Vista user profile.

-Used ArcSoft Photostudio instead (included in the disk). Worked just fine.

"Perfect for scanning in family photos - great for beginner" 2009-12-04
By maximum verbosity (Ohio USA)
I had been wanting a scanner for a long time but it wasn't in my budget. It seemed that the cheaper scanners had terrible reviews. I've owned a lot of Canon cameras so when I found this scanner in my price ranger, I decided to give it a try. I'm not disappointed! It does exactly what I needed it to do - transform a box of old photos into a neat file that I can easily burn to CD for safekeeping. It's super easy to use, just put the item on the scanner (like a copy machine) close the lid and press "scan". It's about the size of two wire bound notebooks lying side-by-side, was very easy to install and comes with simple, easy to use software for tweaking the photos if you don't have or don't want to use another photo editing program.

Another 5 stars for a great Canon product!

 "Not A Bargain..." 2009-12-04
By Will Daniels (Indiana, USA)
I followed the step by step instructions only to be greeted with an "Insufficient Memory" error message each time I tried to launch the scanning software. I re-followed the same simple step by step instructions with the same result and after researching the problem online I found that this is a common issue with these scanners and many Canon printers in general. The end result is that after about three hours of frustration I have printed out my "Return to Amazon" labels and will be sending this scanner on it's merry way. I can't say anything about the scanning quality because I never got that far. Amazon is awesome and I have no doubt that they will refund my purchase price as well as the return freight, so all I am out is my time. Call it a lesson learned I suppose and take it from me, you should look a little further before making your decision. This one is not a bargain. Good luck!

I bought this to go with my new computer, I scan the old family photos so there're digital copies of them all. This scanner paired with a Windows 7 system scans perfect replicas of photos. Some people complain it's slow but what can you expect when scanning a photo that takes up the entire scanning area at 1200 DPI for less than $100?

I think it's great for the price, works very efficiently for what I need it for, it's compact and easy to take on the road with my, it fits snugly in next to my laptop.

I do wish it was a little wider as to accommodate full size pieces of paper or two photos side-by-side.

This small scanner installed very easily on my dual-boot XP Pro and Windows 7 Home Premium PC. The front panel controls allows for easy selection of COPY/SCAN/PDF/EMAIL functions. The resulting scanned document has decent color repro JPG or PDF. The bundled Canon Utilities are useful and easy to use. Since I am using Adobe Photoshop 7 I have no need for the bundled ArcSoft software. It is very light and easily packed inside a 17" laptop case for ease of transport. I consider this a very good value buy from Amazon.com all the more because of the free and quick shipping.
