We purchased two negative and one photo scanners at Best Buy. After fumbling with the flimsy apparatus provided with the negative scanner, I saw the Epson V500 Photo Scanner on Amazon. I checked the other reviews and made the plunge. I'm so glad I did!
I returned the two negative to digital photo scanners (the combined cost was greater than the Epson) and now use only the Epson. It is awesome. I can lay up to six photos on the bed and it will scan each photo in as separate photos! The negative holder holds up to 12 negatives, it takes a little longer to scan them in but I find other things to do while they are being scanned in and come back to it.
I kept the photo scanner I had (it is a single photo type - put the photo between a piece of plastic and push it through scanner) but only because I used the heck out of it. It was slow, manually intensive, required cleaning often, and doesn't look like it will last to the end of all of the photos I have to scan.
My recommendation to anyone is pass on any other products if you plan to scan photos and negatives to digital and buy this product. We were able to scan a photo album in half the time with the Epson that it took with the other product and the only cleaning required was glass cleaner. Epson Perfection V500 Photo Scanner

was looking for a simple scanner that would scan my old pics, black & white, polaroids, etc...and this scanner does an impressive job!!! At a great price also,
however, it's probably even cheaper now. It enlarges pictures w/o great distortion
& gives you a variety of choices in correcting common photo problems. It's very
easy to use, and actually fun to experiment with when working with difficult photos - Epson makes great products...I highly recommend this product!!!

With no manual and documentation on line I did mostly
trial and error to get things to work to my liking. It
would be nice to have an already printed manual.
I've used it with 110 neg color film up to the max the V500
would fit in the copy area. 110 had to be pushed up against
the edge of the 35MM window to keep it straight
Overall I'm very satisfied with the V500

I unpacked this scanner and had it up and running on Windows 7 in less than 10 minutes. Go to Epson's web site for the latest Windows 7 driver. Their isn't one on the included CD. Once you install the driver and plug in the usb cord everything is there. I scanned film negatives and slides and was amazed at how well they looked. There are several things you can do to adjust the color like digital ice and such. It made a big difference with older slides I had. Highly recommend this scanner. I ended up paying $130 for it off of amazon, great deal.

Just started using this scanner and it seems to be a good one. I have scanned about 50 photos and one B&W neg. All look great. The negative was an odd size so had to place it by hand.. this took a few tries as the scanner wanted to split it into two images. Also, when you scan several photos at the same time the scanner occasionally groups 2 or more into a single image. This is to be expected, it's a machine, not a human. To solve this issue just re arrange the photos on the plate slightly further apart, or scan one at a time. Either way the software does a great job of saving and naming the images. I have high hopes for this scanner. I will re-post if it disappoints.
